A flash-mob organized by the “Pro Abele Ajello” Citizen Committee will be held on Tuesday 23 April in front of the Abele Ajello Hospital in Mazara del Vallo with the aim of making its voice heard in view of a hospital reorganization which could penalize the whole Mazarese citizenship. “We would like to have an enlightening flash mob – explained the president of the Committee, Dr. Nicolò Di Giovanni – turning on the torches of their cell phones and filming this illuminating audience from above and then sending the message on social media ‘Enough dark plots, let’s give light to the Mazara hospital’. It is hoped that all the mayoral candidates are present and demonstrate their commitment”. THEThe Committee was formed a couple of months ago and is trying to make its voice heard on a very delicate issue: “AWe have around 200 activists, who will be present in this flash-mob and should involve other people. We could end up with a thousand people attending this event”.

The Dr. Di Giovanni, former head of Cardiology at the city hospital, also explained to us the objectives that the Committee has set itself:The idea is to hold a meeting in front of the hospital because the Mazara population must become aware that the Mazara hospital is becoming an emergency room. Politics spent over 30 million euros to then make it an emergency room, they establish who, how and where to assign departments. Now we are talking about mergers, but it should be done with criteria, competence functions, history and professionalism. Instead it is done for political weight. We must avoid ending up like the sardine with the shark.” The mergers are not to be demonized sight unseen, but according to Di Giovanni there is a lot of levity in how they would have been conceived: “It seems that the Region is developing a plan to merge hospitals, given the shortages of staff and staff. If I have to have high-level oncological surgery, how can I not also have resuscitation, which is indispensable in the post-surgical period? Mazara is a level I DEA only on paper, not having intensive care, Castelvetrano is a basic hospital and has it. What game is this?”.

The approaching administrative elections and the concomitance with the electoral campaign could finally turn the spotlight on the real conditions of the hospital: “Mayors are the ones responsible for public health. If a mayor does not show off his attributes, it is clear that those with more political weight can influence the Health Commission and prevail. Unfortunately Mazara does not have political representation at a regional level, therefore the deputies – concludes Di Giovanni – do what is convenient for them in their own electoral catchment area”.
