Weather, storms and strong winds arriving: Sicily among “yellow” regions

A low pressure area forming over the Tyrrhenian Sea will tend to reach the Ionian sectors on Friday 19 April, causing a phase of bad weather in the southern regions. Associated with this disturbed passage there will be an intensification of mistral ventilation over Sicily and Calabria. Based on the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved, which are responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned, has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions. The weather phenomena, impacting on the different areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).

The warning predicts scattered to widespread rainfall from the early hours of tomorrow, Friday 19 April, also in the form of a shower or thunderstorm, over Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily, especially in the northern sectors. The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind. Furthermore, from early morning, north-westerly winds are expected, from strong to gale-force, with local gusts up to strong gale, on Sicily and Calabria and storm surges along the exposed coasts. On the basis of the expected phenomena, a yellow alert has been assessed for tomorrow, Friday 19 April, for storm and hydrogeological risk in Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, Campania, Calabria and sectors of Sicily.

The meteorological picture and the critical issues expected for Italy it is updated daily based on new forecasts and the evolution of phenomena, and is available on the website of the Department of Civil Protection (www.protezionecivile.gov.it), together with the general rules of conduct to be followed in case of bad weather. Information on regional alert levels, on specific critical issues that could concern individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will monitor the evolution of the situation.
