Trade between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Iran is worth 40 million euros. What is the risk in case of war
Descriptive text here

There is a part of Friuli Venezia Giulia which as documented in other moments cannot detach itself from a kind of commercial dependence on Moscowtherefore from Putin’s Russia. But there is also a regional sector rather substantial and economically significant shaking hands with the ayatollah regime, to Iran of the Islamic theocracy which only a few days ago brought a shower of kamikaze missiles and drones to the skies of Israel. And we talk about million euros which every year move between Trieste and Tehran, with a common thread that dominates over the others: steel.

What happen

Imports and exports, there is a little-known world that on trail of money links Friuli Venezia Giulia to the Islamic Republic of Iran. And it’s a growing world. Indeed, for some products we can easily speak of a surge. A network of commercial relationships that is now tremblingthreatened by international tensions that risk setting fire to the Islamic world and the Middle East in general.
Let’s start with imports, therefore from the products that leave Iran and reach Friuli Venezia Giulia every year. The data, in this case, are those of Istat reworked by the regional Ires and by the researcher Alessandro Russo. In 2023 Friuli Venezia Giulia imported material goods from the Ayatollah’s Iran worth 12 million euros in total. A real explosion, since in 2022 the figure did not reach one million and 300 thousand euros and a year earlier it had settled at seven million euros. Large orders in this case, all attributable to the province of Udine, which alone guaranteed imports for 11.6 million euros.

The trade relationship with Iran

Which type of goods moves on the route between Tehran and Friuli Venezia Giulia? Steel reigns supreme. In fact, steel products alone are worth 11 million euros. In second place are the products of permanent crops, which stop at almost 600 million euros in revenue. The import of other food products is increasing, even if these are low figures. At a territorial level, then, Pordenone seems to have “given up” on the relationship with Iran: imports, in fact, fell from 349 thousand to 33 thousand euros. Udine surged, going from 585 thousand euros to 11.6 million euros.

Goods exported from Friuli Venezia Giulia

But Friuli Venezia Giulia has also shown itself to be turning towards Iran over time. And not just to buy, but to carry out the opposite operation: sell your products. And even in this case these are clearly growing data, with Pordenone which in this case recorded one of the most substantial increases. The chapter of exports from Trieste to Tehran therefore opens. The overall value, considering the whole of 2023, amounts to 29 million euros. In 2022, however, the figure stopped at 21.8 million euros and was at 17.5 million euros in 2021. The province of Pordenone is the one that exports the most to Iran, with a share that last year it reached 17.5 million euros, equal to the total exports of Fvg to Iran in 2021.
As for the products, in this case the lion’s share is made up of machines for special uses and refractory products, i.e. products resistant to very high temperatures. Then there are chemical products worth 2.5 million euros and other general purpose machines for a total of 5.4 million euros.
