«With profound dismay I learned this morning of the application of precautionary measures to the former mayor Gianluca Festa and with even more dismay I read the statement from the prosecutor’s office which harshly denounces the privatization of public management in the city of Avellino, the attempt to pollute the tests within the Municipality, the methodologies with which a public competition was falsified”.

This is what the outgoing group leader comments in a note Avellino Takes Part, Francesco Iandolo.

«We have been trying to report all this to the citizens for years, believing that the political conduct of the Festa administration, its lack of transparency, its top-down decision-making processes, the direct assignment of orders and funds was impoverishing the democratic processes, fraying the ties of the community, distrusting the value of politics. We would never have thought that criminal dynamics could be hidden behind this, such as to lead the prosecutor’s office to issue house arrest.

Avellino needs to find a fair peace, to reweave its ties, to metabolise what has happened in recent years and why many of the practices currently under investigation by the prosecutor’s office have had so much consensus.

Without demonizing anyone, much less the citizens who supported and still support this administration by talking about “clockwork justice”. Instead, we should talk, meet, try to explain neighborhood by neighborhood what good administrative practice is, what public management of power means, how to include citizenship in this with the most cutting-edge practices such as co-planning and co-programming.

It will be up to the Commissioner to understand – in agreement with the prosecutor’s office and the prefecture – whether the expansion of the investigation and the consequent precautionary measures involve the administration to such an extent as to make local elections impossible. Of course, it would be almost unique to postpone the elections without the aggravating circumstance of mafia infiltration, but it would give a measure of the seriousness of the investigations underway.

What is up to us, to the associations, to the citizens of the city is to take to the streets and talk, discuss, discuss. Building new opportunities for rapprochement with politics, participation, and an ideal vision of an alternative to the state of the city. Without thinking that everything can be archived to return to the past, without putting what happened in a drawer but above all without judging, that the court will take care of that” concludes Iandolo.
