The Provincial Secretariats of Confasal, Copagri, Feder.Agri, Fna, Confagricoltura and Free Farmers of the Province of Trapani “in denouncing the state of total abandonment of the dams, ask for an urgent meeting with the Competent Authorities before the devastating effects of the drought compromise the future of tens of thousands of agricultural companies”. “The dramatic appeal was launched with a harsh union document sent to the President of the Sicily Region Renato Schifani, to the Regional Councilor for Energy and Public Utilities Giovanni Di Mauro, to the Interim General Manager of the Water and Waste Department Calogero Giuseppe Burgio, to the Commissioner for the drought emergency of the Sicily Region Dario Cartabellotta and for information to the General Manager for Dams and Water Infrastructures UTD of Palermo Calogero Morreale and to the General Secretary of the Basin Authority of the Hydrographic District of Sicily Leonardo Santoro”.

The Trade Union Organizations “in reporting to the Competent Authorities for the umpteenth time the situation of extreme hardship that the agricultural companies of the Province of Trapani have been experiencing for many years, further burdened at this juncture by the serious drought that has hit Sicily, denounce the state of precariousness in which the Trinità and Rubino dams have been located since 2018. Almost 6 years after the limitation of the reservoir (reduction of the maximum capacity) imposed by the Basin Authority on both the Trinità dam and the Rubino dam, simultaneously reported to the Water Department (Responsible Department for the Sicily Region for maintenance and safety) nothing or little has been done, other than the imposition of limitations in the storage of the scarce rainwater in the area served. The consequences of all this, the provincial secretariats of Trapani point out, weigh on agricultural companies, producing devastating effects which, added to market problems and high energy prices, are leading to the collapse of the agricultural sector”.
