Healthcare, comparison of deficiencies in Calabria

COSENZA – Open a dialogue with the ASP of Cosenza, work on healthcare problems in Calabria: from the Cup to the aggregations of general practitioners, the cutting of departments, the paradox of the Sacro Cuore birth center closing. Competent community looks at the largest province of Calabria, its needs and the need to change the “face” of healthcare in Calabria. He does so with a “work” meeting at the headquarters of the Quotidiano del Sud in Castrolibero, together with the general director of the ASP of Cosenza Antonello Graziano.

We start with the waiting lists and the lack of staff, the central point of the introduction by Elena Hoo of the Auser of Cosenza, who announces the opening of branches together with the CGIL “to facilitate access to care” and make known what it already exists but is poorly known, starting precisely from Aft. The point is highlighted by Rubens Curia, spokesperson for Comunità Competent, the organization founded together with Don Giacomo Panizza of Progetto Sud which brings together 105 associations around it. Curia insists on those participation tools that should be present in the Calabrian healthcare system, from the consultation of associations and the volunteering table, aspects that Graziano is called to introduce in the coming weeks. In a Calabria that cuts birth points “we have proposed that maternity homes be built, let’s not expect a fourth birth in an ambulance or at home”. The same goes for screening: “we are available to collaborate so that it increases.”

One point “in favor” of the new hospital network: “territorial hospitals are planned – says Curia”. The point is upstream: in a Calabria with hospitals at the center we need to offer a new paradigm. Treatment first at home, outside the emergency room. «Nothing has changed in 12 years – says Don Giacomo Panizza – my health has not improved. How many people from Calabria still come to my Lombardy, not only as patients but also as doctors.” Panizza strongly insists on the need to organize itself, to create a sort of connection between citizens and the “system”.

A connection that has a purpose: to give citizens participation again around a collective theme. Health. A theme that is at the center of the introductory speech by the director of the Quotidiano Massimo Razzi: «Support participation, talk about your “exploits” and perhaps in a year organize general states on healthcare in Calabria. A bit like what happened in 2012 with the “march of 40 thousand” organized by this newspaper in Reggio Calabria against the ‘Ndrangheta». Then we get into the technical issues, those that most closely concern the community of the province of Cosenza. The president of the provincial order of nurses, Fausto Sposato, returns to a proposal that he has been pursuing for some time. «Nurses could easily do most of the interventions that block waiting lists. let’s leave doctors the chance to be doctors.” «If it is true that the home must be the first place of care, someone needs to change the paradigm, to ensure that a community nurse knocks at patients’ homes, to carry out prevention in schools. In Calabria there are 85 thousand elderly people alone.”

On one side the nurses, on the other the general practitioners gathered in the Aft. Antonio D’Ingianna (Fimmg) announces some upcoming news: «In every Aft studio collaborators and nurses have been hired, now we have to make them work». Starting from oncological screenings, where Calabria records terrible numbers for memberships and checks. «Next week this will be decided on precisely in the ASP of Cosenza. Doctors will be the ones to raise awareness and call patients, we will do a huge information campaign.” In the meantime, they must be strengthened, bringing health closer to the territory. We are working on this too.
