MESSINA – The family members waited a long time Lavinia Marano, she died shortly after giving birth, in 2016, at just 44 years old, to seek justice. In recent years they have never given up and in addition to following the trial linked to the case they have animated a civic committee in memory of the singer from Messina. They waited a long time but now the second degree sentence is closer.

The process

In fact, yesterday at the end of a long hearing which ended only late in the evening, the Court of Appeal set the final session for May 7th, which will serve to give the parties the floor in the event of any counter-replies and then enter the council chamber and come out with the verdict.

The trial had an interlude which took longer because the judges, after having reopened the preliminary investigation, ordered a new expert report to establish the actual responsibilities of the doctors involved in the tragedy of the singer who died after giving birth to her first child. The family has in fact put the hospital treatment given to the pregnant woman under scrutiny, asking for any responsibilities to be established. Lavinia was fine and they never made peace with the fact that she was taken from life at such a young age and without being able to meet the eyes of that much-wanted son, who was left an orphan when he was just one day old.

New consultancy

Professor Stefano De Pasquale Ceratti, specialist in forensic medicine, and Dr. Paolo Neck, director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Cannizzaro hospital in Catania, examined the documentation and established their conclusions, entrusted to the judges and the parties. Yesterday, therefore, there was nothing left for the lawyers and the Attorney General’s Office to do but discuss. PG Costa urged the judges to confirm the first verdict degree of December 2022: conviction for 4 doctors and acquittal of 6 other white coats. However, the prosecution has appealed to re-evaluate the possible responsibilities of the exonerated doctors. The lawyers Giovanni Caroè and Nunzio Rosso, lawyers for Lavinia’s family, asked for their appeals to be accepted and for a provisional payment, while the defenders of the defendants insisted on the acquittal of their clients.

The death of a new mother

Lavinia Marano was well known in the city for her singing activity. She had given birth to Francesco at the Polyclinic. Initially everything seemed to have gone well: baby and mother were in excellent condition. She had chosen natural birth but during the procedure she opted for a caesarean section. In a few hours, however, everything came to a head and Lavinia breathed her last at dawn the next day. L
