«No sign of imminent eruption»

That the Phlegraean Fields represent a threat to the safety of citizens of Naples it is a well-known fact. But what the Italian-speaking Swiss public television says, CSR, will certainly not allow the inhabitants of the area to sleep peacefully. In a report published on YouTube, entitled “Naples, the supervolcano that threatens Europe”, a catastrophic scenario is hypothesized, in which the eruption of the Campi Flegrei would end up burying the Neapolitan capital “under 30 meters of volcanic material”. Causing, according to volcanologist Patrick Allard, “victims and great destruction”.

Campi Flegrei earthquake, what’s happening? «The tremors due to the ground rising by 1 centimeter»

Naples, the shock documentary on the eruption of the Campi Flegrei

The images proposed, if possible, are even more distressing: in the documentary, lasting approximately 42 minutes, we see an animated 3D reconstruction of Piazza del Plebiscito submerged by burning clouds, in a completely devastated city.

The documentary states: «Naples hides a silent monster. It is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, whose activity alarms experts and the Italian government. The possible resumption of the activity of this supervolcano, which has forty craters, worries the 500,000 inhabitants who live in the red zone and threatens the twelve million tourists who visit the city every year.”

«In the region – explains the Swiss TV report – seismic shocks are now the order of the day and the scenario of a large eruption is not excluded. In the reportage we meet worried Neapolitans and scientists ready to raise the alarm at any moment. The risk of a major eruption could have devastating consequences for the whole of Europe.”

«Thirty minutes is too little to evacuate a city»

One of the experts interviewed during the documentary, Amy Donovan, professor of Geography at the University of Cambridge, explains: «At that point the city would have to be deserted because the air would be saturated with ash, pyroclastic material and volcanic residues of all kinds» . The documentary, after estimating the times in which the eruption would occur, concludes in a ruthless manner to say the least: «Thirty minutes is too little to evacuate a city».

Ingv: «No sign of imminent eruption»

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), commenting in a note on the media coverage received by the Swiss documentary, states that there is currently no sign of an imminent eruption of the Campi Flegrei. «This is information that is not based on data, and which completely ignores all the important scientific and planning activities that have seen, and still see, scientists and Civil Protection working side by side to manage the volcanic and the relative risk of one of the most anthropized areas in the world”, we read in the note, signed by the president of INGV Carlo Doglioni, the director of the Volcanoes department of INGV Francesca Bianco and the director of the Vesuvian Observatory of INGV Mauro A. Di Vito.

«The Campi Flegrei are the largest active urbanized caldera in the heart of the European continent. Since 2005 it has been affected by the bradyseismic phenomenon which causes ground lifting, earthquakes and fumarolic emissions. The caldera is monitored by a continuous multi-parameter monitoring system. All the data provided by this system, at the moment, do not show evidence of the imminence of a volcanic eruption, much less of large proportions”, reads the note.

«Volcanic risk mitigation actions – continues the INGV – are based on sharing correct information on the state of the volcano. Sharing can take place in many forms, such as the publication of data and bulletins on institutional websites, school meetings, meetings with the population exposed to risk, seminars, conferences, training courses for journalists and so on. The broad spectrum of these activities is continuously practiced by our Institute.”
