PORDENONE – That there wasn’t much room for manoeuvre, given the obvious landslide caused by one of the waves of bad weather of autumn-winter, was now clear. But now the official confirmation has arrived, supported by a technical and geological report that the Municipality of Pordenone had commissioned from a group of specialists: five trees in the Querini park will have to be cut down. Every day they risk collapsing to the ground, endangering those who frequent the green area. And for this reason we will have to act quickly.
Querini Park, what are the unsafe trees
In detail, as the municipal councilor for the environment, Mattia Tirelli, explained yesterday, the cypress will go down first which has its now fragile roots on the top of the central hill of the Querini park. Even with the naked eye you can see how that tree is now at the limit of equilibrium. The landslide that occurred in the center of the Querini park caused a small landslide, which reached the walkway below. And the cypress that will need to be cut is located right on the upper edge of the earthwork. But the cypress will not be the only tree to be cut down in the Querini park in Pordenone.
«We will have to cut down another four plants – explained councilor Mattia Tirelli yesterday morning – which are not significant (or salient, in technical jargon) from an ecological point of view but which are currently in unstable conditions. And therefore they can potentially create a danger similar to that brought by the unsafe cypress.” In this case, these are trees that are shorter than the main tree and, according to the experts who completed the assessments, they have also reached the end of their life.
The project for the park
First the cutting and restoration of the basic safety conditions of the park, then a project to repopulate the central area with greenery. «In this first phase – the municipal councilor Mattia Tirelli always explained – our priority is to prevent the trees from falling to the ground and possibly hurting someone. Then we will arrange, in a subsequent phase, for the planting of new plants.” And the hill where the problem arose? Evaluations are underway, including economic ones, on whether or not to intervene to restore it by eliminating the disruption that was created due to last winter’s bad weather. An operation that the Municipality will only carry out at a third stage, provided that the costs are not unaffordable.

Querini Park between safety and cleanliness
Querini park is not going through an easy time. Only a few weeks ago the groups of volunteers who travel around the city every seven days to clean it up found more than fifty bottles of beer on the ground at Querini. Almost normal, unfortunately, in that area of the capital. And last weekend there was space for the mayor Alessandro Ciriani to vent against the people who had reduced one of the benches in the green area to a pile of waste. The theme of safety is also central, with some groups of young people spending alcoholic afternoons right in the heart of Querini.
