More and more foreign children in Sassari schools

The number of foreign children attending schools in Sassari is growing.

Sardinia is also becoming increasingly multi-ethnic, although – for geographical reasons – less so than the rest of Italy. Sassari it is one of the areas with the most foreign minors, although the primacy goes to Olbia and the coastal areas of Gallura, dwhere the percentage of foreign students is over 10%.

In the city the percentage of foreign residents in the range 0-17 years it was 4.6%. There were 16,340 minors. Around 756 are not yet Italian citizens. Also ad Alghero the foreign component is growing, where students are 4.1%, therefore 5128. But 212 children and young people still do not have Italian citizenship. This emerges in a study by Openpolis, which questions the role of schools in combating discrimination against foreign minors, through ISTAT data from 2022.

The report, published in January 2024, analyzes how school can be a place for the inclusion of foreign minors against inequalities and discrimination. Often foreigners live in poorer families and the rate of school dropout is 3 times higher compared to children and young people of Italian parents.

Sassari.

Returning to the province of Sassarithe number of foreigners living in the area is significant and this has led to a generational turnover, even if it is not enough to cover the demographic decline of Sardinia and the territory and, above all, there are still few young people who have Italian citizenship, due to national legislative gaps.

The community is growing even far from larger cities, such as small towns, where immigration is concretely mitigating the depopulation of these small communities. He is an example of this Semestene, where the presence of the group of minors from 0 to 17 years is 15.4% in 2022. There are 13 of them, of which 2 do not have Italian citizenship. TO Thiesi they were 6.5% in 2022, or 384, of which 25 do not have Italian citizenship. Also consistent with Florinaswith a figure that rises to 8.1%, where the children living in the country are 185, of which 15 do not have Italian citizenship.

In the rest of the Sassari area, including Porto Torres, the percentage of foreign minors is a minority (1.1%). There are 3082 aged 0 to 17, of which 35 do not have Italian citizenship. Numbers which in relation to the more significant ones in the north-eastern coastal area (Gallura) are small. For example, ad Arzachena the number of foreign children and young people is 11.6%. That is, 2013 out of almost 14 thousand inhabitants, of which 234 are not Italian citizens. A percentage similar to that of its neighbor Olbiawhere the number of very young students is 10,084 and 1156 with Italian citizenship.
