More and more foreign children in Sassari schools

The number of foreign children attending schools in Sassari is growing.

Sardinia is also becoming increasingly multi-ethnic, although – for geographical reasons – less so than the rest of Italy. Sassari it is one of the areas with the most foreign minors, although the primacy goes to Olbia and the coastal areas of Gallura, dwhere the percentage of foreign students is over 10%.

In the city the percentage of foreign residents in the range 0-17 years it was 4.6%. There were 16,340 minors. Around 756 are not yet Italian citizens. Also ad Alghero the foreign component is growing, where students are 4.1%, therefore 5128. But 212 children and young people still do not have Italian citizenship. This emerges in a study by Openpolis, which questions the role of schools in combating discrimination against foreign minors, through ISTAT data from 2022.

The report, published in January 2024, analyzes how school can be a place for the inclusion of foreign minors against inequalities and discrimination. Often foreigners live in poorer families and the rate of school dropout is 3 times higher compared to children and young people of Italian parents.
