CATANIA – Last night in Catania, in Piazza Europa, a police officer who intervened to rescue a woman who had been beaten up by her partner was in turn attacked by the man, suffering a fracture of the nasal septum. The woman suffered some injuries. To make it known the general secretary of the FSP State Police Walter Mazzetti, which underlines how the attacker “has been released pending trial”. According to him, this would be the “emblem of a system with links that are far too loose for those who commit crimes”.
According to the trade unionist, essentially, there is enough to define what happened as a “hoax”. “We feel like we have to operate in a situation where severity and firmness seem conceived only against the police forces – continues Mazzetti – according to an incomprehensible plan that appears almost aimed at countering our action as law enforcement officers rather than that of criminals”.
The request: greater security
“In expressing full solidarity with the attacked colleague and his family, as well as with the entire Flying Squad for the self-sacrifice with which it works in favor of the Catania community – adds, for his part, the provincial secretary of the FSP Catania Giuseppe Sottile – we strongly ask for greater safety conditions for those who carry out our delicate work”.
“Guarantees and protections on which we can count – concludes Sottile – are insufficient and let’s see who is there attacks without restraint and is treated with abnormal indulgence it makes us feel the terrible feeling that our sacrifices are in vain. The police continue to carry out their duty with self-sacrifice, but we need a clear reversal of trend that restores the idea that our lives count for something and the sense of the certainty of punishment for those who commit crimes”.
