Mirandola (Modena), prescribes fewer sick days than those requested by the patient: family doctor beaten bloody

TO Mirandola (Modena) a family doctor was attacked in his office by a patient, who brutally beat him, causing numerous injuries and forcing him to seek hospital care, from which he was subsequently discharged. His “fault”? He prescribed “only” two days of sick leave, rather than the ten required. As expected in these cases, the rescuers filed a complaint with the police.

“It is a very serious and uncivilized act, which must be condemned with the most absolute firmness – commented the general management ofModena Local Health Authority -. As a community, we cannot allow these incidents to happen again against professionals who work daily for the good of all citizens. There is no justification for incidents like these. We need respect for those who carry out their work with dedication and competence. Society must be united in condemning these events and sending clear messages.”

In 2023, 328 episodes of violence against healthcare and social-health workers were recorded in Modena hospitals.

“We are deeply concerned about this escalation of violence against doctors, which no longer spares any category of colleagues – he declared Filippo Anellipresident of the National Federation of Medical Associations (Fnomceo) -. The special relationship of trust that until now had acted as a shield for family doctors has been torn apart. This is a very serious episode, which is also a wake-up call.”

And again: “Let’s not forget that the denial of a service that the doctor deems inappropriate is, according to data from the ministerial observatory, one of the reasons that most frequently trigger violence. It is for similar reasons that the psychiatrist Paola Labriola, in Bari, and the cardiologist Gaetano Alaimo, in the province of Agrigento, were killed, and that many colleagues were attacked, insulted and threatened, even at gunpoint”.
