ANCONA – Another acquittal. And the en plein is served. Now the account with justice is definitively closed. «This was the thirty-fourth trial, I have never been convicted. On the other hand, I have always done the right thing.” The reflection of Luciano Lucchettiformer chief engineer of the Municipality, arrived late yesterday morning, after the sentence issued by judge Tiziana Fancello: «The fact does not exist» the formula used to decree the thirty-fourth acquittal for the former manager, who retired in 2017. “The circle has finally closed,” said trial record holder Lucchetti, assisted by lawyer Roberto Tiberi.

The last obstacle

The last burden was represented by an old issue: the restyling of the benches in Piazza Cavour which, according to the first accusatory hypothesis, had been carried out in an illicit manner. Or rather, the former chief engineer was accused of having given the OK for the restoration of the “victory benches” without having received the prior opinion of the Superintendence. These are Art Nouveau cast iron seats dating back to the 1920s and of particular historical-cultural interest. One, in fact, had General Armando Diaz’s text on the spar following the victory in the First World War. The bulletin was issued by the chief of staff of the Royal Army on 4 November 1918. This very bench was at the center, after the restoration, of a real case.

The seat was exhibited at the Mig (Italian Cast Iron Museum of Longiano) and then seized on behalf of the prosecutor’s office by the Carabinieri of the Heritage Protection Unit. After the restoration, the other four historic benches were returned and placed on the sides of the square. The fifth, after leaving the museum, is now on display in the art gallery. The hearing came because Lucchetti had opposed the criminal conviction decree (4,800 euros) issued by the judge for the violation of the Cultural Heritage Code. The restoration of the benches was planned by the Municipality on the occasion of the renovation of the new square, inaugurated in July 2016.

The other processes

In the trial which ended yesterday morning, the prosecutor’s office also requested acquittal for Lucchetti. The 73-year-old engineer has just returned from other proceedings. Among the latest, the one relating to the staircase of the Passetto scarred due to the passage of a bobcat and the one hinged by some residents of Piazza Cavour due to the annoying noises brought by the buses. Many others referred to lawsuits for road injuries suffered by citizens.
