This announcement, contained in Decree of the President of the Republic dated 10 April 2024clearly outlines the allocation of seats to the different constituencies.

The constituencies, as defined in Table A attached to law of 24 January 1979, n. 18 and related amendments, receive a specific number of seats.

So let’s find out more about the division and distribution of “available seats” among future members of the European Parliament.

European elections 2024, here is the number of seats due to Italy

In Italy there are five European electoral constituencies, each with a number of seats assigned based on the resident population. Parties can present a maximum number of candidates equal to the number of seats assigned to the constituency.

Voters can only vote for candidates on the list of their constituency of residence: North Western, North Eastern, Central, Southern, or Insular.

Here is a snapshot of the allocation of seats to the constituencies:

  • I. North-Western Italy (Piedmont, Aosta Valley, Liguria, Lombardy): 20 seats.
  • II. North-eastern Italy (Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna): 15 seats.
  • III. central Italy (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio): 15 seats.
  • IV. southern Italy (Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria): 18 seats.
  • V. Insular Italy (Sicily, Sardinia): 8 seats.
  • Total: 76 seats.

Here is the attachment with the complete table.

It should be noted that constituencies often produce remains in the calculation of the seats due. These remainders represent the fractions of the electoral quotients that are not sufficient to assign an entire seat. To avoid penalizing constituencies with higher remainders, an additional seat is assigned to constituencies with higher remainders.

It should therefore be noted in the table that some remains, marked with an asterisk they brought to the assignment of an additional seat

to the corresponding constituency.
