The data from the research conducted on behalf of Amyc – Associazione Marche Yachting & Crusing, by the Polytechnic University of Marche on the trend for the years 2021-2022 with focus on the Marche region in relation to the yachting and cruise market was presented.

The research conducted by Valentina Giannini, Donato Iacobucci, Marco Ciro Liscio, Martina Orci (Research Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of UnivPM) initially frames the European context in relation to the construction of ships and boats for the years 2021-2022 (data Eurostat) where Italy appears as the first European nation in terms of employed people and sales, reporting 34,535 employees in 2022 (approximately +7% compared to 2021) with a turnover of 11,035 million euros (approximately +5% compared to 2021), followed by France with 33,017 employees and 10,250 million in turnover with an increasing trend compared to 2021 and by Germany with 24,249 employees and 8,647 with a slightly decreasing trend compared to the previous year.

In the Italian regional context, the Marche region, according to Istat 2021 data, is in 4th place (after Liguria, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Tuscany), representing 11.3% of those employed in the ship and boat construction sector with over 200 local units and more than three thousand employees.

The turnover of the industry in the Region exceeded 1 billion euros, driven above all by exports which represent over 90% of sales, where in the years from 2020 to 2023 the increase in exports to non-EU Europe and a reduction towards America (Istat).

The recreational boating industry in the Marche region specializes in large luxury yachts (20-40m) super yachts (40 – 80m) and maintenance & refitting. As regards the specialization of the product sold, 67% concern yachts, 17% explorers and a further 17% other types. On the materials side used for construction, 60% of the products are in Fiberglass/plastic, 20% in metal and a further 20% in both of the previous ones (source: direct survey among Myc members)

The industrial value chain, according to the direct survey among Myc members, reports 80% of the activities (including: Design, Metal hull construction, Grp hul lconstruction, Pre-Fitting, Outfitting, Mechanical and handling part, Navigation equipment, Entertainment, Exteriors ) entrusted to external partners; over 10,000 people employed by regional production and outsourcing distributed to suppliers located mainly in Italy and the Marche region

Among the members of the Marche Yachting & Cruising association, the study recalls, the shipyards appear: Cantiere delle Marche, CPN, Ferretti Group, Italia Yachts, Lisa Group (Cantiere Rossini), Nerea Yachts, Palumbo Superyacht, Silent Yachts, Wider; the designers FM Architettura di Interni, Lp Luxury Projects, Massari Design; the interior contractors Cantori, Minodecore Poltrona Frau; the technical components Ams, Corset/Linset, F.lli Canalicchio, i-Carbon; the installers Furlanetto International, Team Italia Marine and Videoworks; the service providers Luise Adriatic, Marine Shore Assistance, Planstudio, Sail Solutions, SaidADV, Timone Yachts and the institutions Port System Authority of the Central Adriatic Sea and the Polytechnic University of Marche.

As regards the distribution of sales from specialized suppliers – many and diversified and therefore capable of allowing flexibility in final production, a high level of customization and the adoption of cutting-edge technological solutions in all production phases – the study specifies that by sector 74% of the sales of specialized suppliers are destined for companies operating in the pleasure boating and cruising sector and that sales in the Marche region are approximately one third of the total; This means that suppliers are able to compete on a much larger market nationally and internationally, providing a bridge for the exchange of knowledge and expertise between the region and the global market.

Finally, the research attests that the companies in the Marche cluster have responded to the challenges posed by the market, such as innovation, the main drivers of which are quality and sustainability. In the 2014-2020 programming period they actively participated in regional calls for research and innovation under EU structural funds (30 projects for a total investment of 19 million euros of which 9 million from private individuals and 10 from public contributions – Source: Opencoesione; direct survey among Myc members). The attention to quality is demonstrated by the prevalence of system certifications: ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental management), ISO 45001 (health and safety); Furthermore, in the future the forecast is for an increase in attention towards certifications in terms of environmental sustainability (direct survey among Myc members).
