New awareness campaign to combat the phenomenon of waste abandonment. With the claim #machitelofafare, the new communication strategy aimed at combating the wild abandonment of waste through the use of camera traps.

“Messina, when it comes to waste, proves to be a virtuous city with good waste separation data. The general objective is to reach 65%”, as highlighted by Mayor Basile at the opening of the meeting with journalists.

“However, there still remain some deviant behaviors – continued Basile – in reference to the abandonment of waste which have pushed the municipal administration together with Messinaservizi to activate this campaign aimed at defeating the abandonment of bags, the incorrect disposal of bulky waste and, in general, the carelessness of the citizen. This is a further step that we are taking to preserve the environment and public decorum, but it is essential that everyone does their part in respecting the rules and caring for the common good. Let’s all try to be sentinels of our territory. The abandonment of waste on the streets continues to persevere and is a purely social problem”, concluded the Mayor.

“The idea of launching this training and awareness campaign – explained President Interdonato – was born from the objective of reaching 65% separate waste collection. All the work we do is dirtied by those who abandon waste; hence the claim #machitelofafare was born, strengthening the awareness and active involvement of citizens on the topic, given that today abandoning waste, in addition to being incorrect, represents a crime punishable by law. This campaign will start on the social media of the subsidiary and on the Municipality’s channels and will concern many other aspects; we want to propose a series of activities and projects that will also concern improving the quality of waste: only by focusing on this can we achieve a good percentage of separate waste collection. A communication campaign with a strong visual impact which, through the use of real images and with the help of cameras becomes more incisive, will allow us to continue to carefully monitor the critical areas of the city to prevent uncontrolled waste abandonment and identify , while guaranteeing privacy, those who carry out such irresponsible gestures. We want the testimonials to be the same citizens, every week there will be a different face who will quote our claim. Close to the Easter and Easter Monday holidays we want to remember to keep our city clean, let’s have fun while taking care of the environment”.

Michele Trimboli, general director of MessinaServizi Bene Comune concluded: “As a first step towards 65%, in February 2024 we can say that we have reached a new record, 58% waste separation. The phenomenon of waste abandonment causes onerous costs, since the expenses that society has to bear for their removal are quite considerable and above all influence the citizens’ bills”.

Citizens are invited to spontaneously apply as testimonials for the #machitelofafare campaign by sending the following email to:[email protected]
