The sky above Naples and Palermo was tinged with an unusual yellow ocher, almost orange, color due to the Scirocco winds that transported the sand from the Sahara to these cities. This phenomenon, which occurs on average 2-3 times a year, was explained by meteorologist Mario Giuliacci, who underlined that the sand remains suspended in the troposphere and is illuminated by the sun’s rays, causing the particular color of the sky. The situation has been worsened by drought and desertification, and is accompanied by a yellow alert in Campania, issued in anticipation of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The transport of fine dust has a negative impact on air quality, so much so that doctors have suggested wearing anti-Covid masks again, especially to protect people suffering from respiratory problems who have already started showing up in the emergency room. However, the phenomenon is transitory and the situation is expected to return to normal between March 28 and 29. Giorgio Budillon, Professor of Oceanography and Atmospheric Physics and Pro-Rector for Research at the University of Naples “Parthenope”, declared that climate change has not caused this phenomenon. Despite the reduction in air quality, the sand transported by the winds is rich in substances and minerals beneficial to the environment. Budillon also added that it is possible that the sand could reach the Alps during the Easter period, coloring the snow red.
In conclusion, the yellow sky and desert dust that hit Naples and Palermo are the result of the Scirocco winds that brought with them Saharan sand. Although there are health risks, particularly for those suffering from respiratory problems, the phenomenon is temporary and also brings with it some benefits for the environment.
