The Met Gala, New York’s party of the year – Fashion

The war in Gaza comes to Madison Avenue, but it didn’t stop the Met Gala. Riot police have deployed to stop the march of demonstrators calling for an end to the war in Gaza. On May 6, the godmother and gray eminence Anna Wintour, global director of Vogue, arrived at the gala, accompanied by her daughter Bee Carrozzini, in a cape embroidered with floral motifs in relief over a white tunic dress by Jonathan Anderson for Loewe, one of sponsor of the evening. The cape was in line with the Garden of Time theme inspired by a dark story by GJ Ballard and in turn linked to the Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion exhibition on the transience of fashion which opens to the public on May 10th.

The fans of the evening, camped out for hours on the corner of 82 and Madison Avenue, were ‘invited’ to evacuate, while in Madison the police, on the alert after the student protests at Columbia and Nyu, made arrests. The red carpet this year was green and white, a tribute to nature that dies and regenerates and which is one of the keys to understanding the exhibition.
A true ‘power cocktail’ of 400 guests including entertainment, fashion, politics and business, the Gala is a key source of funding for the coffers of the Costume Institute (named after Wintour). Last year the takings were 22 million dollars. This year each ticket cost 75 thousand dollars, 350 thousand dollars for companies or groups who decided to book a table. The party is by invitation and all guests must be approved by Wintour (including their look) to enter.
And so here are the two million tinfoil pearls for Jennifer Lopez, one of the godmothers of the Gala and a veteran with 14 times on the Met’s red carpet, who walked on the runway in a nude look dress by Schiaparelli that required 800 hours of workmanship , around her neck is a Tiffany necklace from the new Celeste collection with a 20-carat diamond. Rihanna’s excused absence is that she usually arrives late: she caught the flu.
While Zendaya, another godmother who hadn’t been seen on the red carpet for five years, showed off two dresses: the 27-year-old star of Challengers (her co-stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist and the director Luca Guadagnino) first put on a Martin Margiela by John Galliano based in turn on a 1999 Dior with a set of birds on the skin, and then, at the end of the red carpet, another black Galliano Victorian Age from 1996 (the era of the designer at Givenchy ) accompanied with a silk flower hat designed by Philip Tracy for Alexander McQueen in 2006.
