AGI – King Charles III resumes his public activities after a three-month interruption due to cancer: For his first appearance the British monarch, 75, will travel with his wife Camilla, 76, to a oncology center where he will meet doctors and patients. The doctors say they are “sufficiently satisfied” to allow this gradual recovery, adapted to his state of health, but Charles has not recovered and his commitments will be “carefully calibrated” in “close consultation with his doctors”, Buckingham Palace said, announcing last Friday the resumption of “a certain number” of commitments.
It is also expected that the king and queen receive in June, on an unspecified date, Emperor Naruhito of Japan and his wife Empress Masako, for a state visit at the invitation of the British Government. Others possible engagements, Royal Ascot, 80th anniversary of D-Day, Trooping the Color in Junetraditional garden parties, will be subject to medical advice, Buckingham Palace explained, according to which doctors are “very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain optimistic that the King’s recovery will continue”.
Nine months after his coronation in May 2023, Buckingham Palace announced in early February that Charles III was suffering from cancer, discovered after a prostate operation in January. His nature and state of health were never specified, but the announcement of his illness was a small revolution and had broken the silence that had until then surrounded the king’s health. Charles III then suspended his public activities, but continued to carry out his duties as a constitutional monarch, including signing laws, holding regular meetings with the Prime Minister and validating some appointments. Buckingham Palace regularly published photos or very short videos of him receiving personalities, preparing a speech or reading get-well cards. The king, very active before his cancer, was apparently eager to resume his public activities.
The year 2024 has been particularly difficult for the British royal family. As well as the King, the Princess of Wales, Kate, was also diagnosed with cancer after major abdominal surgery in January. The 42-year-old princess, star of the royal family, announced her illness on March 22 in a video and said she was undergoing preventive chemotherapy, although she did not specify the nature of her cancer. Since then no news has filtered through Kensington Palace which manages her and her husband’s communication, Prince William, heir to the throne. The couple celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on Monday.
