93 year old, Flora Monti connects with the ‘Splendida Cornice’ studio to tell her incredible life (which also recently became a documentary film of the same name). Just thirteen years old, she was the youngest courier in Italy: she had taken on the task of delivering notes to the partisans, aware of the risk of ending up “taken and tortured by the fascists, a friend of mine died like this”. Before accepting the job, however, she asked her parents’ permission. Monti explains that she did it to honor the memory of her grandfather “who she told me had been beaten and mistreated for years because he didn’t want to get the Fascio membership card”. On two occasions, she was stopped for checks. The first time she got away with it, she pretended to have left the house to buy a cigar for her father. The second was more dramatic: “Two Nazis and a fascist made me undress, they tore my jacket to see if I was hiding something in the lining. In the end, I was left in my tank top and underwear. They found nothing, but only because I had managed to hide the note I was carrying in the toe of my shoe well. I’ve never read any of them. I thought that only in this way would the information remain safe because even if they tortured me, I would never be able to say anything, not knowing anything.” National hero.
