Walking reduces back pain, study reveals surprising benefits

A study published in the Lancet shows that walking regularly can significantly reduce the backache. The clinical trial conducted by the Spinal Pain Research Group of Macquarie University followed 701 adults, showing that those who walked had fewer episodes of lower back pain than the control group. These findings could revolutionize the management of low back pain, offering an accessible and effective method to prevent it and improve quality of life.

The study on back pain and the researchers’ explanation

The findings could have a profound impact on how low back pain is managed, the study coordinator points out Mark Hancock. “The intervention group had fewer occurrences of limiting pain than the control group and a longer average period before a recurrence, with an average of 208 days compared to 112 days,” Hancock says. «Walking is a low-cost, widely accessible and simple exercise that almost anyone can do, regardless of geographic location, age or socioeconomic status. We don’t know exactly why walking is so effective at preventing back pain, but it likely includes a combination of gentle rocking movements, loading and strengthening spinal structures and muscles, relaxation and stress relief, and the release of feel-good endorphins ‘. And of course – he concludes – we also know that walking has many other benefits for cardiovascular health, bone density, maintaining a healthy weight and improving mental health”.
