The third episode of the twelfth season is dedicated to the patient Delana Boyer. The woman was strongly determined to get back into shape not only to have better health, but also to mend broken bridges with her family. Her journey has been anything but easy. Her story is truly touching.

“Lives at the limit”, the difficult journey of Delana Boyer

Originally from Greenville, Tennesse, Delana Boyer openly told her story to “Lives on the edge”. The 46 year old she was raised by a first cousin (Mary Ann) who later became her adoptive mother. Her biological mother, Sharon, had abandoned her. However, she Sharon kidnapped Delana when she was only seven years old and kept her with her before she returned her to Mary Ann.

Delana began eating more and more as a method of comfort during this situation which was so harsh for such a young child to endure. His weight continued to rise. Around the age of 20 she became pregnant by her partner. She hoped that her life would finally take a happier direction. Unfortunately, the baby died at birth. The pain was excruciating.

In later life she married another man who had “no problems” with her obesity. The two had a son named Lee but shortly after her husband decided to file for divorce and took full custody of the child. Delana married a second time and had a daughter named Savannah. However, the violent nature of her partner forced her to end the relationship. Unfortunately, her relationship with her daughter was also highly toxic. The little girl, in fact, ended up running away from her mother at the age of 12. At the time of the airing of the episode dedicated to her, Delana reported that Savannah was now 19 years old and had never returned home, highly embarrassed by the appearance of her mother.

Delana decided to make a change in her life starting from losing weight. She turned to Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, surgeon and protagonist of “Lives on the edge”. He put her on a 1200 calorie diet and imposed daily physical exercises. The woman even moved to Houston, Texas (where the doctor’s clinic is located) to make the whole process easier. Little by little, she managed to lose weight independently. Dr. Nowzaradan then gave her the OK for gastric bypass surgery. The bariatric operation was a success. Delana has continued to lose weight and lives a happy existence with her new husband named James.
