With almost 16 million departures between April 25th and May 1stItalians do not miss the appointment with spring and its long weekends, spending a total of around 5.5 billion euros. If the weather stabilizes, in particular for the 30% or so who head for seaside resorts, these values could grow further, reaching 20 million departures for around 6 billion in terms of spending. In the overall panorama of the two bridges, the choice of tourist accommodation facilities for overnight stays at destination remains absolutely majority: between 55% and 60% depending on the period taken into consideration, even if, for that of May 1st, it doubles the percentage of those who opt for short-term rentals (from 6% to 12%). These are the main data that emerge from the Focus on bridges by spring of the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory in collaboration with Swg.

Liberation Day – which falls on a Thursday and therefore constitutes a particularly attractive bridge – will see over 9 million Italians travelling, around one million more than last year, thus confirming the good performance of internal tourism demand which, since February, seems to have overcome the “tired” phase that characterized it for a good part of the second half of last year.

The choice of destinations is quite concentrated, with 31% opt for coastal locations it’s a a further 31% which instead points to villages, cities and cities of art, while 1 in 10 Italians prefer the mountains. But above all, in comparison with the same period of 2023, the number of those who go outside their own region, however remaining in Italy (47%) or going abroad (17%) increases by 6 percentage points. .

The average stay at destination also increasesne, with 3 out of 10 Italians planning trips of 4 days or more, a third of which will connect the two bridges and stay at their destination for more than 6 days. The approach to budget forecasts is less enthusiastic, which, in terms of average expenditure per capita, remains substantially in line with that of last year, at 320 euros.

The forecast for the bridge is also positive May 1st with almost 7.5 million Italians travelling, a million of whom, however, as mentioned, will be on holiday as early as April 25th. Here the variable of meteorological conditions weighs more heavily, at least for the moment: an uncertainty that spills over into the choice of destinations, with seaside destinations decreasing slightly, going to 26%, while villages, cities and cities of art total the overall 22%, 9 points less than the liberation bridge; third type of destination, countryside locations, with a significant component of second homes, which accounts for 14% of preferences. The mountain is stable. Also in this case, compared to last year, the radius of travel of Italians traveling increases: in fact, the share of those who will stay close to home or, in any case, in their region, and the number of those who go abroad increases by 14%. However, the average per capita expenditure assumed by the interviewees as a budget is reduced from 340 to 310 euros: it will be a complicated exercise to make it compatible with the “incremental” forecasts of duration and radius of the holiday.
