A glamorous event followed by the media all over the world and marked by a deep fracture in the groom’s family. Here’s what happened
A fairytale wedding, overshadowed by a deep family feud. Holly Ramsaydaughter of Gordon, chef patron of the three-starred «Restaurant Gordon Ramsay» in Chelsea, London, arrived today at the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Bath for the wedding with Adam Peatythree-time Olympic champion, world record holder in the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke in the long course. At the end of the ceremony inside the Anglican church also famous for appearing in the Netflix series Bridgertonthe guests moved to Kin House, a Georgian villa nestled in the Wiltshire countryside, where the reception is taking place and where the newlyweds, family and closest friends will stay for the night.
An event celebrated by the entire English press, and beyond, and amplified by a strong media echo due to its protagonists. And a marriage marked by shadows, on the way of an unprecedented storm that overwhelmed the groom’s family, including arrests, public accusations and breakups.
The facts: Adam and the disagreement with his mother
Last November the news emerged of the exclusion of the swimmer’s mother, Caroline Peaty, 59 years old, since his son’s marriage. A choice attributed directly to Adam who decided not to invite her to the ceremony or the celebrations. The decision had triggered a harsh reaction from the champion’s family who, on social media, had accused him of having “distanced himself from his origins”, calling him a “narcissist” transfigured by fame and money. Caroline would not even have been invited to Holly Ramsay’s luxury hen party, organized at Soho Farmhouse, in Oxfordshire, which they had attended – among others – Adam’s sister and Victoria Beckhamthe latter a dear friend, together with her husband David, of chef Gordon Ramsay.
According to some relatives, the exclusion was also motivated by alleged incidents of body shaming: the sample’s mother would have been judged “out of place” compared to the style considered more “glossy” of the Ramsay family. According to the athlete’s aunt, Caroline would have been “deeply shocked by the decision”, while the woman herself had published messages on social media speaking of a “broken heart”.
Adam and his disagreements with his brother
To exacerbate an already rather compromised situation, a few days after these events, was the arrest of his older brother, James, 34. According to what emerged, the man, in mid-November, would have been stopped by the police on charges of sending a series of verbal threats to Adam while the athlete was in Budapest to celebrate his stag do. James was questioned for two days and later released on bail.
The climate of alarm seems to have been such that, upon returning to England, Adam Peaty was reportedly escorted by armed officers at Manchester airport, with the authorities busy monitoring the security images before accompanying him out of the airport, fearing possible attacks.
Tensions upon tensions, in short, which, according to the best informed, have their roots in older disagreements. His brother James would have been hurt by some passages in the autobiographical book published by Adam in 2021, in which the champion referred to his “demons”. Other frictions would emerge during the couple’s engagement party and they would also be linked to economic issues and the management of the swimmer’s notoriety.
The bride
But the wedding had to happen and it happened. Just today. Holly, 25, looked radiant as she entered the church accompanied by her father. To maintain the surprise effect, she covered her Christmas wedding dress with an embroidered lace capeallowing a glimpse of the scalloped skirt under the train for just a few moments. Before crossing the crowd, the bride kissed her father on the cheek, while security made their way through onlookers and photographers. Gordon Ramsay greeted by wishing merry Christmas. The bridesmaids, including mother Tana Ramsay and sister Tilly, they preceded the bride with red and green dresses, in perfect Christmas theme. Among those present were David and Victoria Beckham, historical friends of the Ramsay family, personalities from the world of sport, TV and London business.
A love story born on TV
The new Mr and Mrs Peaty met in 2023 on the set of Strictly Come Dancingthe British version of Dancing with the starsshortly after the swimmer’s separation from his previous partner, Munromother of his son George-Anderson. From that moment on they have never separated again, building a solid relationship even away from the spotlight.
The official engagement is in 2024. Holly broke the news in September by sharing the image of the ring on Instagram: a solitaire with a large carat fancy yellow diamond. Over time the two went through complex phases, linked to the mental health of the swimmer who said he had faced a period of depression after a serious injury. A relationship that has strengthened and which explains the chef’s emotion in accompanying his daughter to the altar.
