While Charles II and Camilla took part in the celebrations on Omaha Beach, together with the heads of state of Europe and the USA – present, among others, Mattarella, Macron, Biden and Scholz -, the heir to the throne took part in an organized event in the presence of some World War II veterans in the south of England.

Just speaking to one of them, the prince gave information on the his wife’s health condition, explaining how Kate really is. Speaking to Geoffrey Weaving, who took part in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, and praising the “extraordinary acts of courage and sacrifice” of those who took part in that incredible feat, Prince William said that Kate “would have loved to be here today”. The heir to the throne recalled that his wife’s grandmother had served at Bletchley Park, the famous British center for code-breaking. The conversation then moved on to the princess’s health, which has been keeping the British population and beyond in suspense for months. “I was going to ask if your wife was getting better?” asked an elderly gentleman, proudly wearing a Union Jack flag and his war medals.

The prince, smiling and available to everyone, simply replied “Yes”. Confirming the reassuring news of recent days, which sees Kate responding well to treatment. Reassuring news also came from Charles III, who revealed to a D-Day veteran present at the commemorations in Normandy that he was “fine”. Kate and Charles’ double cancer diagnosis profoundly shook public opinion, which found itself lost, just 16 months after the death of its historic queen. Suddenly without points of reference, the population relied on Prince William and the senior members of the royal family, not only Princess Anne, but also the dukes of Edinburgh Edward and Sophie, awaiting Charles’ public return last Easter. Although it will take longer for Kate, we can only hope that the worst is now behind us.
