Rome, 30 December 2025 – 2025 ends with a post-operative convalescence for Mara Venier. The popular TV presenter, 75 years old, is once again hospitalized after a right eye surgery. The presenter had already undergone surgery last November.
Venier, without makeup and in a blue coat, appears on the hospital bed with the eye blindfolded (the structure, as in the previous intervention, is made of transparent material). Despite the discomfort, the presenter does not lose her smile and her face a little in painposts a video in his Instagram stories, to wish everyone a happy new year.
Let’s end the year like this. Happy New Year everyone. Let’s hope it’s really the end of this year
On social media the presenter also has thanked the doctor Andrea Cusumano who has been following her for months now. Mara Venier suffers from maculopathy and last November 9th she also spoke about it on Domenica In. For this reason, the presenter has to undergo surgery: last year she underwent five. “I had a sudden hemorrhage in the retina of the eye right”, explained Venier.
The discovery of the disease and the story to the fans
The presenter spoke about her pathology to Gente, on the occasion of the release of the film ‘Diamanti’ by Ferzan Ozpetek, in January 2025. “I had just started filming when I felt a discomfort in one eye. I saw badly, blurry and one evening, in front of the TV, I realized I could only see on one side. I had aretinal hemorrhage caused by a pathology, exudative maculopathy”. Venier was therefore subjected to emergency surgery but the problem is not solved because the evolution of the maculopathy must be constantly monitored.
“Professor Cusumano had said that I would no longer see out of my right eye, but instead I recovered a little. I should stay calm and calm but I work like crazy, I work a lot, I never spare myself and I go up and down on the train between Rome and Milan”, said Venier, who never hid the problem from his fans. In fact, it was she herself who made her illness known in the summer of 2024 to prevent uncontrolled rumors about her health from spreading.
Cos’è to maculopathy
Maculopathy or macular degeneration it is a pathology that affects the macula, i.e. the central area of the retina. It is progressive and irreversible, but it is possible to slow down or even stop its progress if it is detected in time, which is why early diagnosis is essential.
The main symptoms of maculopathy are: gradual loss of central vision (positive scotoma), associated with metamorphopsia, i.e. a distorted and poorly detailed perception of everything that is straight (lines in books, steps, tiles and more). Colors are also perceived in a faded manner.
