The new album is called “Good luck” but we have to wish it to him, ad Ermal Meta, for the new adventures he is about to experience. In order of importance: the birth of the first daughter (who will be called Fortuna), the album that will be released on May 3rd (Columbia/Sony), the tour that will take place on July 13th from the Teatro Romano in Verona (in Rome on September 5th) , his debut as a “presenter” at the May Day Concert at the Circus Maximus.
Meta, let’s start with Fortuna, whose father he will be soon.
«The best wishes are for her but also for all of us. It is about finding our way and our place in the world. Because luck, unlike chance, you can guide it, direct it, it is the vital energy that accompanies us. And in a moment like this, so dark, in which never before has our future been questioned, in danger, it seemed to me the right wish to send.”
Musically, the 12 songs seem like a mix of different influences, from singer-songwriter to the 80s sound.
«I’ve never made genre albums, I would find it boring, the music is all beautiful. Here is a bit of what I have been up to now, from La Fame di Camilla to today.”
Jake La Furia in “Malepiù non fare” and Levante in “Io e te” are the voices of two featuring.
«Two choices that have the same motivation. Sometimes, when you finish a song, you have a feeling of unfinished, that there is something left unfinished. You need a point of view different from yours for the circle to close. I had met Jake months earlier on a TV program. Delightful person. I played him the song, he liked it, he said yes. Despite the distance between our genders. Apparent distance because in the end the musicians all look alike, they are linked by “van life”. I have always appreciated Levante not only for her vocality but for her ability to “chew” words. And in the recording room we discovered common frequencies between our voices. She was the other soul of the song.”
Sifting through the verses we can talk about an album that invites hope.
«An invitation to do: doing is the only way we have to live, never giving up, dreaming while awake. I don’t know any other ways. The fact is that we are caught up in a senseless speed, in the desire to demonstrate that we are always on track, the best, the first and all this forces us to stay on the surface. We have forgotten that even within pain there can be beauty, otherwise what would be the point of suffering if you learn nothing?”.
He starts touring again from mid-July.
«The best moment, without a doubt. We go back to looking the public in the face. The open-air theaters are wonderful although sometimes too big. The arena makes you anxious, the stadium is an exaggerated space. My comfort zone is always the club. I have never had so much fun as in 2019 when I did quartet concerts in clubs.”
How is the music here?
«Well, the numbers say so. There is a great offer that embraces all tastes.”
As a veteran he accompanied the young Maninni to Sanremo.
“Veteran? (protests smiling) But I still feel very young, almost a “new proposal”… I was pleased to accompany Alessio, who, being from Puglia, is my fellow countryman. Of course, pop isn’t going through a very happy moment, it’s the urban moment, but tastes change with the times, even quickly: the sound that is popular today may not seem so beautiful tomorrow.”
Are you preparing for the role of presenter of the “Concertone”?
«It goes without saying that May Day is not just a musical event, it is not just the largest free live show in Europe: there is a social sensitivity underlying this way of celebrating Labor Day. Especially at a time when safety at work is a central issue, together with peace and social justice. It’s a free stage, everyone will be able to express their opinion. Noemi and I will above all be the ferrymen, the connecting points of the show.”
Are you afraid of controversy?
«Those will always be there. But we will work with conscience and responsibility.”
