«It was a complicated birth. It’s very bad between us, we don’t sleep together. But we are happy”

Federica talks about her birth: «I had the caesarean section 48 hours after the contractions, she had started to have an irregular heartbeat and we didn’t feel like going any further. I had violent contractions after all those hours. I was exhausted. My husband supported me because I couldn’t even stand.” Matteo explains how he experienced those moments: «They are strong emotions and there was a lot of worry but as a sportsman I kept calm».

The new life as parents

Matilde, born on 3 January 2024, however is doing very well: «After the first very difficult period I understood the beauty of this moment, she eats a lot». Matteo is very much in love: «Even as a mother, Federica is extraordinary». Breastfeeding is one of those moments that Federica Pellegrini loves: “It’s as if we were tied by a thread.” Matilde, who is now 3 months old, looks like her dad, and the swimmer doesn’t like it: “I did all the effort and then she looks like him.” Federica and Matteo have a whole new light on their faces, that of two happy new parents.

A drastic change in the lives of the two athletes, as happens to any couple who become mothers and fathers: «Now our life is turned upside down but she begins to interact and it’s extraordinary, when she smiles it’s our happiness but between the two of us things are very bad – the athlete smiles – he sleeps with the four dogs and I with the little girl. Now we’re waiting to get out of the tunnel.” Any plans for another child? «Maybe in three years when we meet again», they smile happy at their new challenge.
