The incentive effect is coming to the car market and in the month of June registrations in Italy increased by 15%. After months of volumes in line with last year and in some cases with a contraction due to the waiting effect, last month registrations were recorded 160,046 carswhile the January-June financial statement (886,386 registered cars) scores a recovery of 5,3% on the same period last year, down 18.2% compared to 2019.

“The good result in June is due exclusively to the registrations of electric cars thanks to the generous incentives launched by the Government and made available to the public starting from June 3,” highlights Gian Primo Quagliano of the Centro Studi Promotor. The success of the incentives for electric cars, which ran out in a few hours, “has reversed the situation compared to the past because, given that the funds for incentives for electric cars ran out in just one day – Quagliano points out – after a month, 23% of the allocation for hybrid cars and 45% of the allocation for traditional cars with emissions from 61 to 135 grams of CO2 per kilometer are still available, for a total of 247 million.”

Recovery for Fiat

Among the brands, it is worth noting the recovery of Fiat, which registered 30% more cars compared to the same month in 2023, a performance that brings volumes since the beginning of the year up 2% compared to the same period last year. Volkswagen registrations, on the other hand, are down, by almost 3% in the month, while Peugeot is also doing badly, by almost 9%.

Renault is doing well, growing by 42% in the month, while Tesla almost triples its registration volumes in June, reaching almost 5 thousand units, contributing to a recovery in volumes since the beginning of the year of almost 20% and doubling its market share to 3.12%. Among new comers, Dr loses 10% in the month and 20% since the beginning of the year, while MG continues its positive phase, recovering 18% in the month and almost 50 since the beginning of the year.

The economic survey on the car market conducted by the Centro Studi Promotor shows that for 53% of dealers the level of orders remains low, while for 31% of those interviewed the market is expected to decline in the coming months. The car market in this phase must deal with two needs, says Qiagliano: «The first is to correctly exploit the incentives lever, the second is to adopt structural measures to relaunch demand. It is no longer tolerable that registrations remain at levels lower than 1/5 compared to 2019 with the consequence of not ensuring the normal replacement of the circulating fleet that continues to age».
