Solar & sound-absorbing panels, first system in A1

Solar and sound-absorbing panels to capture “two birds with one stone”: energy and noise. It will happen with the system currently being completed, on the A1 Milan Naples, south of Rome, at the Valmontone junction. It is one of the first photovoltaic systems in the world mounted on motorway sound-absorbing barriers.

With the energy produced, 80 MWh per yearthe Valmontone toll booth, saving 600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. This is the energy equivalent to the annual needs of over 20 families.

The project involves the installation of 2500m of barriers in the north direction and 1500m in a southerly direction. In total over 20,000m2 of surface area and 432 photovoltaic modules made of monocrystalline silicon. Each 140Wp, divided into 72 strings.

The components of the photovoltaic system are integrated on sound-absorbing barriers specially designed and placed at a height varying between 3 and 9.5 metres. The inclination is 33° and the exposure is south.

The project is part of a Autostrade per l’Italia’s broader plan which aims to extend this experimentation to other routes as well.

The photovoltaic system was built by Motorways for Italy in collaboration with Elgea, Group company engaged in the development of innovative technological solutions for the production of energy from renewable sources, with the possibility of operating in the largest “open-air” laboratory in Europe, i.e. 3,000km of the motorway network in concession, with a view to moving towards increasingly sustainable mobility and significantly contributing toGroup Net Zero objective.

With the Mercury Program – Smart Sustainable Mobilitythe Autostrade per l’Italia group “works towards the construction of a large unitary and coordinated hub for technological innovation, in order to guarantee safer infrastructures, participate as protagonists in the revolution of increasingly sustainable mobility, as well as actively contribute to the national objectives of decarbonisation and energy transition, digitalisation and innovation in mobility systems“.

The Program involves the various subsidiaries of the Group. It fits into the “Green Solution” Cluster which contains projects aimed at the production of electricity from renewable sources and the distribution of energy through electric charging stations and alternative fuels to fossil fuels.
