The Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi, has captured the world’s attention by introducing its first car, an electric car that takes direct aim at major market players such as Tesla and Porsche. Initially available only in China, the Xiaomi SU7 model is now ready to debut in Spain too.

Borja Gómez Carrillo, country manager of Xiaomi Iberia, announced this important step forward by the company during the “Vision to Life” event. With this move, Xiaomi, already an established leader in the scooter market in Spain, aims to replicate its success in the electric car sector. Even if Spain confirms itself one of the countries most reluctant to adopt battery-powered vehiclesXiaomi is banking on the great reputation it has gained over the years.

May it be a very first step by Xiaomi for test the satisfaction of the European market? If this were the case (and the result were to be positive) we could soon see the Xiaomi SU7 also in Italy. Doing the math, in fact, Xiaomi SU7 would cost less than Tesla Model 3 in Italy if we also consider VAT and customs tariffs.

The Xiaomi SU7 is already on the market in China with three different versions with a starting price of around 28,000 euros. The version intended for Spain has not yet been officially confirmed, but it is likely to be the basic version. This configuration offers a 220 kW (299 HP) engine, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.28 seconds, and a 74 kWh battery that guarantees a range of 700 kilometers.

Furthermore, in China the SU7 Pro version, with the same engine as the base model but a 95 kWh battery for a range of 830 kilometers. Finally there is the SU7 version Max, which features two electric motors that release a total of 495 kW (673 HP), with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds and a 101 kWh battery that offers a range of 810 kilometers. Xiaomi claims that this latest battery can recover 200 kilometers in just five minutes of charging.

As for the price, although the SU7 is sold in China for less than 28,000 euros, the cost in Spain will inevitably be higher due to tariffs, taxes and VAT. For example, VAT on cars in China is 13%, while in Spain it is 21%, which will affect the final price. However, it is likely that Xiaomi will try to keep the price competitive, positioning itself below direct competitors such as the Tesla Model 3.
