The Chinese company Weichai presented an innovative diesel engine which challenges the currently restrictive regulations in the European Union, thanks to an unprecedented energy efficiency level of 53.09%. This data has been officially recognized by various international certification bodies.
The diesel engine, long considered an icon of robustness and efficiency in the automotive industry, has seen a very sharp decline in recent years. Growing environmental concerns andrise of electric cars have raised doubts about its future, so much so that the European Union plans to completely eliminate combustion engines by 2035. This trend has led many people to consider the decline of the diesel engine as inevitable.
However, thanks to this research and development effort, with the involvement of hundreds of researchers and engineers, Weichai has a diesel engine that exploits a “high expansion” combustion. The team working on this project overcame the barriers of thermal efficiency, attempt after attempt, reaching this unprecedented value.
This advancement not only promises to reduce the operating costs of diesel engines, but also to significantly reduce C02 emissions. Furthermore, the benefits of this innovation will also extend beyond the automotive sector, positively influencing sectors such as construction, agriculture, shipping and energy production.
In China, however, they are not the only ones who still believe in diesel engines. Toyota also claims that diesel engines still have a future. Toyota Australia manager Sean Hanley believes diesel is solid and reliable, especially for SUVs and pick-ups. Toyota has in fact recently launched the new one in Australia Hilux Mild Hybrid with turbodiesel engine. Akio Toyoda, CEO of Toyota, predicts that the electric market will not exceed 30% of the global market share (at least in the next few years). The Japanese group, therefore, will be at the forefront to satisfy the void in demand for diesel engines left by its competitors.
