There are several factors that have contributed to the increase in fuel costs. The demand for gasoline has increased. The growth in demand has put pressure on supply and led to an increase in prices. Events such as conflicts in oil-producing areas, international sanctions and diplomatic tensions have contributed to the instability of oil markets.

This instability has affected the supply of crude oil and caused fluctuations in gasoline prices. The costs of extracting, refining and distributing oil have increased, directly affecting gasoline prices. Oil companies must recover these additional costs through increased consumer prices.

The increase in petrol prices has various impacts on the economy and families. Drivers and businesses that depend on vehicles for their operations face higher fuel costs. This can affect the prices of goods and services, contributing to inflation. Families on a tight budget may find themselves struggling due to rising gasoline costs. This can reduce the availability of funds for other essential expenses, such as food or rent. Sectors such as freight transport, tourism and agriculture can be seriously affected by rising fuel costs. This can slow economic growth and reduce the competitiveness of businesses.

Petrol prices: a new blow

The constant increase in the price of petrol continues to cause concern, especially in view of the upcoming long weekend of April 25th and May 1st, when many Italians plan to travel by car. This phenomenon, already known during summer exoduses and holidays, sees fuel costs rise precisely at times of greatest traffic influx.

In detail, April 16th the maximum price of petrol on the motorway was recorded at 2.489 euros per liter for service on the A1 Milan-Naples at km 481 towards Rome, while for self-service the maximum cost was 2.089 euros per liter in the same distributor. As for diesel, the price is around an average of 2.3 euros per litre, exceeding 2.5 euros per liter at the pumps with the highest prices.

The cost of diesel on the motorway at the same distributor mentioned stands at 2,399 euros per liter for served and 1,999 euros per liter for self-service. Second a recent analysis conducted by Altroconsumo, with an increase in diesel and petrol prices of almost 15% in just 3 weeks, in 2024 a full tank of fuel for a car will cost Italians over 1,700 euros per year.

This price increase was influenced by the international economic situation, with the consequences of the Suez Canal crisis having a significant impact on oil markets. Despite that, the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy tried to reassure the population, underlining a “substantial stability” in fuel prices. The Ministry highlighted that, although there are some distributors who charge higher prices, there are many others who offer prices lower than the national average.
