The book:
Redenta was born in Castrocaro on the day of the Matteotti crime. There are rumors in the village that she has bad luck and that she won’t even make it to the feast of San Rocco. Instead, for the party she is still alive, while Matteotti is found dead. This is how fascism really begins, and also the story of Redenta, of her family, of her people. A world of radical violence – the Twenty Years, war, male abuse – yet of inexhaustible trust in humanity. Although Bruno, her beloved childhood friend who promised to marry her, regardless of her “crazy leg” due to her polio, disappears for no reason, she never stops waiting for him. And when the hierarch Vetro chooses her as his bride, the sadism he inflicts on her fails to extinguish her instinct for salvation: for others, before herself. Redenta’s life intersects with that of Iris, a partisan in the gang of the legendary commander Diaz. What secret is Iris hiding?
