“I have not lived in vain. Stories of life”. A title, a book and eight professional/human life experiences, which have become a precious assumption, example and stimulus of renewed commitment, for a human-scale, professional, human and inclusive society.

The latest literary effort (Edizioni della Goccia) by Silvia Carni from Casale will be presented on Friday 3 May, at 9pm at the Santa Chiara Auditorium in via Facino Cane 31, in dialogue with Paola Todeschino and with introductory greetings from the journalist Gad Lerner and by the Scientific Director of Vitas Daniela Degiovanni.

One hundred and eighty-one pages to collect the testimonies of Vitas Odv healthcare workers, enriched by a compendium dedicated to Burnout Syndrome (a state of chronic work-related stress characterized by the feeling of complete exhaustion of one’s physical and mental energies), edited by the psychotherapist Marilena Vector.

The idea, born in 2022, took shape after the meeting with Degiovanni, following the great impulse of the then treasurer Silvana Banfi, to whom the book itself is dedicated. A publication that also has the aim of conveying the delicate world of palliative care, home care and the Zaccheo Hospice, through the stories of doctors and nurses who, for 25 years, have been an integral part of Vitas. Telling and telling about themselves are: Daniela Degiovanni, Anna Caramellino, Andrea Cavallero, Paola Gallea, Valerie Piot, Pinuccia Caprioglio, Franca Chiabrera and Paola Ballarino; in the final chapter the healthcare workers themselves take stock and explain how they defended themselves from Burnout syndrome. To embellish each chapter, then, an aphorism which, starting from a key word, summarizes the peculiarities of each of them.

Retracing the history of a pioneering service, which found its beginnings in Casale Monferrato, Carni delves into the courageous professional-human journey of the operators involved and does so by fully expressing her sensitivity towards the human soul and the social, in the different declinations and nuances.

On the cover, a symbolically evocative image of the protagonists of the stories who, at rest as quiescent, are placed in the heart of a flower, metaphorically representing the beauty of their work and the scent of the nobility that animated them.

The book, hot off the press and with a circulation of 120 copies, will be presented for the first time on Friday evening. The proceeds from the sale of the book will go to support Vitas’ activities.
