The loneliness of an eighteen year old. The isolation, the silence, the breaking of bonds. But also the hope of rebirth. It is the story of Isis, a girl who suffers the negative effects of the pandemic and the problems faced by her parents. A story told by the journalist and presenter Claudia Conte in the volume ‘The voice of Isis’ published by Readaction editrice Roma. Aimed in particular at young people, the book deals with youth discomfort fueled by Covid which has interrupted their social life, drying up relationships and transforming them into small islands distant from each other.

A highly topical topic that the author addresses by leveraging a positive interpretation. Isis, in fact, re-emerges from the discomfort into which she has fallen. Intrigued by a civil service announcement, she approached volunteering with an interest in issues related to gender violence. “In a world and in a time in which everyone speaks without saying anything, silence is born as a metaphor of incommunicability and solidarity becomes the only language with which to find the word again”, states the writer Maurizio de Giovanni in the introduction adding that “the value of this book is expressed in the author’s involvement with what she investigates, in the evident personal and emotional participation that binds her to the topics she deals with, and even more in the solution she dictates: the pandemic and the resulting isolation has produced a drama but like all crises it has been able to transform itself in many cases into a precious opportunity to call into question an entire system of inequalities to which we have guiltily become accustomed”.

Page after page, however, other themes that concern the youth universe also emerge: the often conflictual relationship with parents as well as the not always easy role of school and family. Open questions that Iside is able to manage through direct commitment to volunteering. An activity that allows her to understand that by helping others, she helps herself to defeat all her nightmares.
