The second edition of the event will also start next weekend in Castellana Grotte “The May of Books”a national campaign promoted by CEPELL – Center for Books and Reading and promoted in the area by Municipality of Castellana Grotte, in collaboration with the Universal Civil Service. It will be the experience Walkabout Castellanaa project created by the MALTE – Music Art Literature Theater Etc association, to open the program of the month in which the multidimensional value of reading is promoted as a tool for personal growth with a view to cultural and civil cohesion of the Community.

Friday 3 and Saturday 4 May 2024starting at 7 pm from Piazza Nicola e Costa, two site-specific walks of approximately one hour will be held with the actress Giusy Frallonardo as a performer guide who will accompany users to discover the historic center while they listen to the readings through wifi headphones. By walking through some glimpses of the historic center and beyond, with a new pace, with an expanded gaze that arises from the story of other spaces and landscapes, other faces, costumes, colors and scents, the participants in the Walkabout will experience a new perception of space. To participate, booking is strongly recommended: you can send an email to emrubino@comune.castellanagrotte.ba.it.

The May of the Books of Castellano will then continue with other events whose calendar is being defined and will feature other places in the city. With act of the Municipal Council n. 70 of 24 April 2024, in fact, the municipal administration has decided to join, also for the year 2024, the campaign to raise awareness of the reading of the CEPELL. The theme of the current edition is “If you read you lib(e)ri” which is divided into three thematic strands: Lib(e)ri to know, Lib(e)ri to dream and Lib(e)ri to create, fully grasping one of the objectives of CEPELL, which is to bring books and reading to contexts other than traditional ones.

THE ORIGINS OF THE WALKABOUT

Walkabout, literally “walking around…”, is an Aboriginal practice made known in the West by Bruce Chatwin, in his book “The Songlines”. The expression Walkabout, popularized by Chatwin, indicates how travel – when it is not tourist, extractive, colonizing, energy-intensive – is a practice of knowledge.

The Walkabout is, therefore, a traveling performance which, from an idea by Ruggero Franceschini, through listening to Sonia Antinori’s travel diaries in Cuba, Burkina Faso, Mexico and Australia and the music of Arlo Bigazzi, gives life to a immersive dimension through which the participants, equipped with wi-fi headphones, explore an “other” reality as they go, compared to the places they pass through every day almost without looking.
