He has published many novels, including Unauthorized investigation (Mondadori 1993, Tedeschi prize for the best unpublished mystery), The day of the wolf (Granata Press 1994, Einaudi 1998), Street of the Geese (Sellerio 1996, Mistery prize 1996), Almost Blue (Einaudi 1997), Autosole (Rizzoli 1998). It is translated into France by Gallimard, in Noire series. Coordinate on the Internet Hatchery 16 and every now and then he sings with the group Progetto K. In 1999 Lucarelli published the novel with Einaudi The Island of the Fallen Angel, set on an island home to a penal colony during the twenty years of fascism. In 2000 you published One day after another, a title that takes up one of the most melancholic songs composed by Luigi Tenco. In the novel Lucarelli reintroduces the character of Grazia Negro, who appeared for the first time in Werewolf and, subsequently, in Almost Blue, which later became a film directed by Alex Infascelli. Other books by him are: Medical Thriller (Einaudi 2002) with Eraldo Baldini and Giampiero Rigosi, Mysteries of Italy – the cases of Blu Notte (Einaudi 2003), Serial Killer – Stories of homicidal obsession (Mondadori 2003) with Massimo Picozzi, The Left Side of the Heart (Einaudi 2003), New Mysteries of Italy – the cases of Blu Notte (Einaudi 2004).

Beautiful Abyssinian” is the second in a series of novels born from a project by Giallo Mondadori, which talks about deputy commissioner Marino.

The first, the introduction to the series entitled An unauthorized investigation, is a fairly old title (1993) that had made everyone think that Lucarelli would have let the character of Marino settle in limbo, given that he already had a successful commissioner like De Luca to carry forward; instead, with a twist worthy of the best mystery writer, here is the new novel dedicated to him, Beautiful Abyssinian. Deputy Commissioner Marino, tall, slender, blond with blue eyes, an actor’s profile, in the first investigation worked at the Rimini police station, and in 1936, investigating the killing of a prostitute, he discovered a feud within the fascist party. Promoted commissioner, but angry and disappointed at having had to accept a compromise, we find him in command of the Cattolica police station. We are in April 1940 and Inspector Marino is a militant anti-fascist with a nom de guerre, Locàrd. His situation makes his life quite dangerous. If they discovered that he was the member of Justice and Freedom who was helping the anti-fascists, he would be first imprisoned and then killed. Marino is good at his job and what he does well are investigations. The case that falls into his hands is one of those that brings trouble from the beginning. The story sinks into the usual corruption that existed in the fascist regime. Where racial discrimination began to take root and which gives rise to even more disturbing suspicions about the leaders and politicians at the head of the country. We talk about Italy and its African colonies, about different mentalities and cultures, about the myth of the superman, about the difference between races, which even in Marino himself, even if he doesn’t realize it, is endemic, in terms of gaffes, even if he is a passionate anti-fascist.

“Bell’abissina” is not a classic mystery, it is a set of narrative genres that ranges from police investigation to thriller and social novel.

Once the culprit was found, in fact, it didn’t end there. Because we will have to frame him and it won’t be easy. We must first of all save the next victim, who does not believe, or does not want to be one, or does everything to be one. In the end, after some necessary suspense, the novel transforms into a reading that makes us question our past, but also our present. On the nature of the intrigue that existed at the time of fascism, but which even now, if we look at certain economic scandals, we realize that our country, ultimately, has not changed that much. A sort of investigation that makes us reflect a lot on today and what we have brought with us from the past. Highly recommended short read, which makes us think about the state of our country.

Lucarelli is a master in describing and telling us about past history, comparing it to today’s world. It makes us “discover” that the quality of life of the people, above all, has not changed that much from the time of fascism to today, that we are all subjected to a sort of oppression, and that the nature of the powerful who “rules it” still exists now, and perhaps even more than before. Thus Silvia Marcaurelio in the Contorni di noir blog.
