In view of the next World Congress of Architects, scheduled for Barcelona in 2026, nominated by UNESCO and the UIA (International Union of Architects) as the World Capital of Architecture, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the City of Barcelona have launched the single-stage international ideas competition “10 Blind Walls”.

All young architects, born after January 1, 1989, are invited to submit innovative ideas to remodel 10 blind walls of the citydistributed in as many neighborhoods, with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy in Barcelona

The winning proposals will be built, where possible, for inauguration in 2026, as part of the UNESCOUIA World Capital of Architecture program of activities.

Participants are asked to resolve urban discontinuities through facades facing public space, both from a compositional and constructive point of view. Each site, based on the typological characteristics, the environment, the urban conditions and the orientation, requires different needs.

The proposals must aim to improvement of construction and thermal solutionsfollowing the energy requalification parameters that take into account the life cycle of the materials, with the possibility of using innovative materials.

Considering that these are permanent interventions, it will be necessary to take into account sconstructive solutions that do not require excessive maintenance, sustainable over time and suitable for welcoming biodiversity.

If selected, the authors of the proposals will participate as consultants in all design phases, through a process of collaboration with the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape – Municipality of Barcelona and the drafting teams of the related executive projects.

Who is it aimed at?

The competition is open to all architects, authorized to practice the profession in their country of residence, born on or after 1 January 1989.

Multidisciplinary teams are allowed, as long as they include an architect.

How to participate

Registration and sending of questions and proposals must take place exclusively via the competition website by August 5, 2024.

The official languages ​​are English, Spanish and Catalan.

  • 1st prize: 3,000 euros
