The Mascalese photographer Vito Finocchiaro triumphs in Dubai

New recognition for the Mascalese photographer Vito Finocchiaro who, in Dubai, in the Solutions category, with the Let It BEE Project, wins the COP28 2024 Photographic Competition, for his portfolio of 5 images that highlight the importance of bees in our food systems and in traditional and sustainable beekeeping techniques.

“A photograph has the potential to be a catalyst for change, inspiring individuals and communities to take significant steps towards a sustainable future” was the Mission of The Climate Tribe which in collaboration with Hipa awarded the victory to Finocchiaro.

The Competition invited photographers to creatively interpret the themes “Planet” and “Solutions” and entries were judged on creativity, impact and ability to convey a powerful message related to climate change and sustainable solutions. The jury viewed 3726 images by photographers from 83 different countries.

“This competition – said the organizers – will raise awareness of the vital need for joint cultural and artistic efforts. The goal is to identify challenges, inspire solutions and create a sustainable future for the planet, ensuring a green legacy for generations to come. We invite and encourage our photography community to showcase the transformative power of art and its role in ensuring a brighter, greener tomorrow.” The competition thus aimed to bring together photographers from around the world to capture the essence of climate action and sustainability. Harnessing the visual storytelling power of photography, the partnership between The Climate Tribe and Hipa aimed to promote a deeper connection between communities around the world and the pressing need for climate action.

The winner of the “Planet” category was Iranian photographer Aref Tahmasebi for the aerial image he called “Over the Parched Land.” The photographer lamented the indelible effects man is having on our planet with the image of him highlighting the impact of rivers drying up.

The winner of the “Solutions” category was the Mascalese photographer Vito Finocchiaro. His presentation was hopeful, encouraging others to protect this critical species, the bee, through awareness and action.

“We all, in our own small way, can and must do something,” said Finocchiaro. “Saving bees means saving ourselves and the future of the entire planet. I am immensely honored to have been able to bring, with the Let It BEE Project, my contribution to a topic of such vital importance and I thank The Climate Tribe and HIPA who have come together to support the transition to SDG13 Climate Action and to global objectives”.

The victory in Dubai represents an important recognition for the Mascalese photographer Vito Finocchiaro, who during his long career has been able to leave his personal mark with his photography, made up of study and research, sensitivity and profound perception of the details of the soul, of the body and nature.

A recognition, the one won by Finocchiaro, which also raises the value of the Mascalese town, full of excellent personalities in various fields of culture, medicine and, thanks to Finocchiaro, also in that of photography.
