The city of Gorgonzola, a municipality in the province of Milan, has banned a ideas Contest for the redevelopment of three public areas – Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, Largo Donatori del Sangue and Piazza Garibaldi – with the aim of transforming them into strategic meeting points for the community.
Competitors are asked to produce idea proposals aimed at one morphological redefinition of the areaswhich allow the recognition in them of the characteristic functions and values of urban spaces integrated into the city network and in strong relationship, also perceptive, with neighboring areas, and at the same time to one wider and easier usewith particular reference to soft mobility, to promoting trade, taking into account the historical value.
The revitalization will therefore have to pass through the strengthening of the identity as civic spaces with the inclusion of attractive poles for events linked to the vocation of each of the squares involved, qualifying the space of relationships and enhancing the places according to the dynamics of contemporary living but respecting, at the same time, the signs of historical identity.
LOT 1: Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII
The square includes a set of pedestrian paths, which surround the Church of San Carlo and its Oratory, enclosing the churchyard in front equipped with benches and tree-lined lawn areas. Its importance derives from the strong concentration of public functions of a socio-cultural nature aimed at all age groups. The challenge consists in identifying a new structure between roads and public spaces, capable of systematizing the peculiarities of each element.
LOT 2: Largo Donatori del Blood
For this area, characterized by a significant urban traffic hub, the redesign of the large green area is required in accordance with the road and parking structure.
LOT 3: Piazza Garibaldi
Symbol in the history of Gorgonzola, it was once called the “five streets” square because all the commercial activities of the village converged there. The tender requires the revitalization of public space, with a thoughtful design of street furniture and the arrangement of paths according to the principles of accessibility, both pedestrian and cycle.

Evaluation criteria
- overall quality of the project from an urban, architectural and environmental perspective also in terms of recognisability and compositional identity | up to 30 points
- accuracy, completeness of the works, in-depth analysis of the compositional solutions proposed in relation to the theme of the competition | up to 20 points
- satisfaction of the needs expressed by the tendering body, with particular reference to the technical-economic sustainability of the project, both from a construction/architectural point of view and through detailed definition of the economic estimate | up to 25 points
- reorganization of vehicular spaces and redefinition of spaces intended for gentle mobility (pedestrian and cycle) in compliance with the overcoming of architectural barriers | up to 20 points
- design quality of the furnishing elements and their ability to characterize urban spaces in coherence with the quality of the context | up to 5 points
