AND a former seventeenth-century convent renovated what today hosts the exhibition on Mario Schifano with works created between 1966 and 1968 that were previously unpublished and come from various private collections, some of which are owned by the new company Roseto e Harves, supported by the leading holding company in the real estate sector and credit Hopafin, which promotes the exhibition right in the spaces of its headquarters. From the courtyard of Spazio Roseto, a newly constructed 10-storey building (built by the Arassociati studio) is visible, which stands out for its linear terraces hosting hanging gardens, which recall the nearby vertical forest of via Gaetano de Castillia and a ‘botanical’ attitude which it is very common on Milanese terraces and attics.

The exhibition on Mario Schifano in Milan. For the first time unpublished works together in a single narrative

A unicum, an absolutely new perspective in the vast series of exhibitions dedicated to the artist with large-scale works, created specifically for people who like him were experiencing the same sensations, and never exhibited again since”, begins the curator and member of the Schifano Works Archive commission Marco Meneguzzo. I am Inevitable trip to Marrakesh, Companions (kiss), Oasis (or Palms) And All stars some of the works presented have never been seen or even photographed until today. In particular, the latter is a work composed of 8 canvases conceived (in 1967) to cover the walls and ceiling of a mezzanine in the house in Rome of Princess Patrizia Ruspoli, faithfully reproduced in the exhibition: Schifano, between poetic movements of stars (by different sizes and colours) and exaltation of the senses, creates an immersive portal inspired by personal experiences (his childhood in Libya, between nights of stars and palm trees), psychedelic visions and myths and exploring the dreamlike and imaginative dimensions of reality. The work is accompanied in the catalog by a photograph of rare value which portrays the princess among the wall paintings of stars at the end of the 1960s.

The exhibition on Mario Schifano in Milan. Between changes in customs and political protest

The exhibition concerns a short and intense period of Schifano, which saw him on the one hand committed to living, sharing and recording in painting the changes in customs – starting from the gained freedom in relationships and sexual liberation – on the other to probing the movements of political protest, starting from Maoist-inspired slogans. Between 1966 and 1970 Schifano experienced his personal revolution by producing cycles of works such as “Oasi” (better known as “palms”) and “Compagni Compagni”, an explicit reference to the protest of ’68”, continues Meneguzzo. It is a palm tree on a red background and stars Oasis of 1967, while in the series Comrades Comrades of 1968 – among which Compagni (bacio) is exhibited for the first time – the chronicle of the time emerges, telling the energy, vitality and action of those years in silhouettes that reveal their icons. To these is added the polyptych Inevitable trip to Marrakesh also from 1968, the year in which he visited the city (with its intense and vibrant atmosphere) which profoundly influenced all his subsequent artistic production.
