The second edition of Capsule Plaza 2024 confirms itself as an unmissable showcase of the best of contemporary design during the Milan Design Week. Here space is given to the hybridization of creative disciplines and to design in its broadest and most radical definition. Through the meeting of designers and companies, here we find a perfect mix of interiors and architecture, beauty and technology, innovation and craftsmanship, masterfully curated by Alessio Ascarifounder and creative director of Capsule magazine and architect Paul Cournetcurrently head of the Capsule Spatial Design studio.
Capsules is a transversal magazine that is published once a year on the occasion of Milan Design Week. The monumental magazine is conceived as a 360° curatorial platform and creative studio, of which Capsule Plaza it is his glossy showcase, a physical pop-up that gives space to the connection between designers and companies. For this Fuorisalone 2024 beyond the suggestive Maiocchi Space the design festival doubles and occupies the gallery of Corso Como 10recently renewed by the interdisciplinary agency 2050+.
Maiocchi Space
Here’s a quick tour of the best of Capsule Plaza 2024 starting from the industrial spaces of via Maiocchi 7 in Porta Venezia, where the internal courtyard welcomes us K67 KIOSK: the capsule designed in the late 1960s by the Slovenian architect and designer Saša J. Mächtig and recovered by K67 Berlin. The system, which is based on modular modules in reinforced polyester fibre, hosts various functions ranging from a simple magazine kiosk to the chain’s pop-up Matchabarfrom the information desk to the DJ booth.
Entering the renovated industrial building of Spazio Maiocchi you are surprised by the colorful installation of BD Barcelona in collaboration with the Belgian designer duo Muller Van Severen. The Spanish furniture brand amazes the visitor with an installation that echoes surrealism, in which individual pieces of furniture become sculptures, which when put together make up a small architecture.
In this former mechanical workshop space, a collector’s car could not be missing, a rare pearl in the world of Italian automotive design: the Lance Hiss presented by Bertone at the 1978 Turin Motor Show, today part of the Lopresto collection. The prototype designed by Marcello Gandini takes the concept of a monolithic car to the extreme.
In the room next to the courtyard, Hydro, leader in the aluminum and renewable energy sector, presents the first recycled aluminum made entirely from post-production waste. To show the infinite possibilities of this eternally recyclable material, the Norwegian company brought together a team of designers, who designed a series of objects (made with anodized steel profiles) characterized by iridescent colors and refined shapes.
Before leaving the Spazio Maiocchi, a quick stop at the installation of is recommended Alaska Alaska: a creative research agency based in London, which, with its series of K67-inspired designs, is the backdrop to the presentation of the new Nike Alphafly 3.
10 Corso Como
We change location and arriving on the first floor of Corso Como 10, we find, for this Fuorisalone 2024, a selection of objects designed by the Swiss architecture studio Herzog & de Meuron. The first collection we discover? A limited edition of the H&dM Objects reinterpreted for Capsule, composed of a family of chairs and stools in glossy black lacquer, made of laser-cut wood and assembled without screws.
In the next room the shoe brand ECCO presents its latest innovative material: a completely transparent leather. The installation aims to actively interact with the visitor who is asked to leave their mark. The installation closes the tour ‘Panton Lounge’ (cover photo of the article), in which, for Capsule Plaza 2024, an immersive room was created in homage to the famous Danish architect and designer Verner Panton, in collaboration with Vitra, Amini, &Tradition, Verpan, Offecct, Kvadrat, Montana and Syng.
Last stop before leaving Capsule Palza 2024: the mezzanine. The multisensory installation is worth a stop ‘Glass Orchestra’ designed by design studio Spacon & X for the brand Iittalastarring an ensemble of unique instruments created by experimental composer and visual artist Damsel Elysium.
