A collapse with a roar occurred just before 6.00 pm today in the Quartieri Spagnoli, in the Steps San Matteo in Toledo, right in the center of a Naples today crowded with tourists in every street. According to the first reconstructions, it was the wall of the external tuff facade that gave way at the top floor of a building. Due to the collapse, a gas pipe was severed and there was a methane leak, fortunately immediately stopped by the firefighters who intervened on site. As a precaution, the firefighters cleared out the building, with about ten families, and the adjacent building and some Neapolitan “lows” in front will probably also be cleared out.

According to initial reconstructions, the external tuff wall would have given way on the top floor facing the road and would have involved the gas pipe, tearing it apart. Subsequently, the gas leak occurred and was immediately stopped. The alley has been completely blocked off, because there would still be unsafe tuff stones. The building has been cleared and some low-rise apartments in front as well as the adjacent building will also be evacuated, for precautionary reasons.
