In the flat stretch after the start from Levico and before the Valle dei Mocheni circuit, the race was controlled by the men of EF-Education EasyPost with a very high pace: over 50 on average in the first hour.
However, as soon as the road began to climb towards Palù del Fersina, it was Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers) and Pellizzari (VF-Group Bardiani) who animated the stage, joined shortly afterwards by Carthy (EF-Education). The trio reached the top of the GPM with 45 seconds of advantage, just enough to be able to think of resisting the return of the group pulled by the Lidl-Trek men.
The attempt ended on the valley floor. The calm before the storm, unleashed by Tiberi, author of a progression on the second climb of Palù del Fersina. The Italian’s action also faded due to the pace of Lidl-Trek, but not Bahrain’s desire to try: on the counterattack, Poels tried to undermine Lopez’s certainties, managing to gain about thirty seconds right near the GPM.
In this phase, Lidl-Trek found the collaboration of Decathlon to chase the Dutchman, who was also caught in the valley bottom. On the Valico di Tenna, the last climb of the TotA, Tiberi, Pellizzari and Bardet tried one after the other, but at that point the most had already been done for Lopez. Nearing the last kilometre, Bahrain tried to launch Tiberi’s sprint in an attempt to grab the stage success, but Paret-Peintre proved to be the fastest of all at the finish line in Levico Terme.
For Antonio Tiberi, the satisfaction of having brought home the white Würth jersey as the best youngster, and given his predecessors, from Bernal to O’Connor and Arensman, and a third place overall which is worth it: the future is his. The blue Gruppo Cassa Centrale jersey of the GPM is instead of Simon Carr (EF-Education EasyPost), while the red DAO Conad jersey of the points ranking and the ocher Subito jersey of the most combative are respectively of Tobias Foss (INEOS Grenadiers) and Simon Pellaud (Tudor Pro Cycling).
