The report “Killed by cardboard” by Greenpeace Sweden revealed a worrying connection between the destruction of Swedish primary forests and the growing demand for cardboard packagingfueled primarily by the e-commerce sector and consumer products.
International companies like Amazon, Zalando and HelloFreshtogether with various Italian companies including Bertolli, Granarolo, Mutti, Lavazza and Segafredowere cited in the report for using packaging from paper mills linked to the destruction of pristine forests in Sweden.
The demand for cardboard packaging, both disposable and short-lived, puts precious ecosystems at risk, threatening not only the biodiversity of Europe’s primary forests, but also the rights of indigenous communities such as Sámiwho have inhabited these lands for centuries.
In 2022, more than 60% of the wood in Sweden was used for the production of paper products
According to Swedish Forestry Industries, in 2022 over 60% of the wood in Sweden was used for the production of paper products. Greenpeace urged companies involved in the report to take immediate action to completely exclude cellulose from primary forests from their supply chain, eliminate the use of single-use packaging and support the implementation of European biodiversity strategies.
Martina Borghi, Greenpeace Italia’s Forest campaign, underlined the importance of companies taking responsibility responsibility to clean up their supply chains from the destruction of forests and to adopt alternative packaging solutions.
The situation highlighted by the report poses a serious challenge for companies and for European policies on biodiversity. It is essential that companies take concrete measures to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging and to ensure sustainable management of forest resources.
Furthermore, it is crucial that the European Union takes an active role in protect the last remaining forests in Europe and in promoting environmentally friendly industrial practices. It is also essential to raise public awareness in taking concrete steps towards the protection of biodiversity.
