“After consulting with Mera25 Germany and his legal team, Yanis Varoufakis is taking the German authorities to the German courts for violation of his fundamental rights And defamation, indicating its intention to appeal, if necessary, to the European courts.” The announcement comes from Diem25the pan-European political movement (whose national parties are called Mera25) launched by the former Greek Finance Minister.

Last April the German authorities banned him from entering Germany and from any political activity. The economist was due to attend a three-day conference on Palestine in Berlin, organized by Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East and other movements. The text of his speech read, among other things: “We are here in Berlin with our Palestinian congress because, unlike the German political system and media, we condemn genocide and war crimes regardless of who commits them. Because we oppose apartheid in the land of Israel-Palestine, regardless of who holds the upper hand.” According to Diem25, the German authorities chose not to answer questions from Varoufakis’ lawyer who asked on what basis the ban was issued, citing reasons of “national security“.

“In Europe they canceled the democracythere no longer exists freedom of the word,” Varoufakis commented when interviewed by Done. “The police intervened with two thousand five hundred officers. They stopped abruptly and seized the microphones. Even our companions Jews were present arrested. A demonstration was then called and the police blocked my voice from being broadcast over the loudspeakers, citing an order banning my political activities in Germany.”

Diem now adds that “by invoking national security to justify their slide towards totalitarianism the German authorities have, in essence, abolished both the German rule of law and the most important principle of the EU, the freedom of movement of European citizens and the right to engage in political activities”.
