The Emergency Life Support ship has been assigned to the port of Naples Pos (Place of safety) which last night concluded a rescue operation for a vessel in difficulty in the Libyan SAR area. The operation led to the rescue of 87 people who had departed from Zawiya (Northwestern Libya) 20 hours earlier and were without food and water. The boat they were on was adrift and overcrowded; it was the aircraft that reported it to the Emergency ship Hummingbird2 Of Pilotes Volunteers.
«We headed to the point that was reported to us and threw our rhibs into the water – he says Domenico Pugliese, commander of Life Support – The boat was overcrowded, taking on water, the tubes of the dinghy were deflated. In total we recovered 87 people. The Italian authorities have assigned us the port of Naples where we will arrive on Monday 6 May in the late morning.”
The 87 people rescued come from Sudan, Nigeria, Niger, South Sudan, Eritrea, Bangladesh, Mali, Togo, Ghana, Liberia, Chad, Cameroon, Senegal and Ivory Coast, countries affected by conflicts and serious economic, political and social crises. Among them there are eight women, one of whom is pregnant, three accompanied children and 14 unaccompanied minors.
«His health conditions are apparently good – he reports Sara Chessa, nurse on board the Emergency Life Support – We immediately took charge of the most vulnerable cases: a pregnant woman in her fourth month and a diabetic boy. The three children on board are well despite the difficult journey they faced and previous traumas.”
