CNN crews at the UCLA encampment site saw dozens of protesters arrested by California Highway Patrol officers. The protesters were trying to reinforce the barricade while the police broke it down. Officers are taking detained protesters onto buses that police have parked about a mile from campus.

CNN saw a group of police officers enter Royce Hall at UCLA University to reach the encampment of pro-Palestine protesters. The TV station claims to have seen members of the police force shooting with what appear to be rubber bullets. Officers then completely dismantled the on-campus encampment, removing all tents.

A group of 100 protesters remain in the area shouting slogans such as “we will regroup”, surrounded by around forty police in riot gear. A video circulating on the web shows the police charging a human chain of protesters and breaking through the barricades created by pro-Palestinian students. Screams can be heard in the background. The officers also used ‘sound cannons’ and rubber bullets against the demonstrators.

The Arizona Police also fired rubber and pepper bullets yesterday afternoon at demonstrators at the University of Arizona during protests by pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups: this was announced by the president of the university, Robert Robbins, as CNN reports. The police made “minimal use” of pepper bullets, rubber bullets and wore tactical security equipment “to disperse the crowd. They had no choice but to take significant measures” in the face of the “dangerous actions” by hundreds of protesters, Robbins said in a statement.

At least 19 people were arrested yesterday afternoon at the University of Texas, in Dallas, after law enforcement cleared out a camp of pro-Palestinian protesters: the Guardian reports, citing a local news channel. According to the latter, it is not clear whether all those arrested were students.

Numerous people were arrested last night during a pro-Palestinian protest at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, in the State of New Hampshire: CNN reports it. A video broadcast by local broadcaster Wmur-TV shows the police moving demonstrators away from the crowd gathered on Dartmouth Green and holding them back with their hands tied by plastic ties. Meanwhile, the demonstrators shout “Free Palestine”.

The University of California (UCLA) has reopened its campus after temporarily closing it because “protesters from outside the school” were protesting near the buildings, as reported by CNN. In a post, the University said protesters were gathered at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street and it was unclear what they were protesting. Shortly after 9pm local time, UCLA said protesters had left the area and that the campus had reopened to “students, staff, faculty and registered guests.”

At the University of California (UCLA), Los Angeles, where there is a large law enforcement presence, police declared the pro-Palestinian demonstration near the campus an unlawful assembly, a source told CNN. The broadcaster stresses that this is a step generally taken before people are ordered to disperse or face arrest. The Los Angeles Police Department earlier issued a citywide “tactical alert” regarding the pro-Palestinian encampment near UCLA, a law enforcement source told CNN. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested in the last 24 hours as protests continue on American campuses against the war in Gaza.
