Ukraine, Russia advances but Stoltenberg is optimistic: “It’s not too late”

The delay in the delivery of ammunition and other military aid from NATO allies to Kiev meant that Russia could advance on the battlefield, “but it is not too late” for Ukraine’s victory. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference in Kiev, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. «Her leadership is a powerful example for all of us. The courage of your people and your armed forces continues to inspire the entire world. But leadership and courage alone cannot repel Russian forces. You also need weapons and ammunition,” Stoltenberg said.

«Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, NATO allies have provided Ukraine with unprecedented support. At the same time, I know that serious delays in support have led to serious consequences on the battlefield. For four months the United States failed to agree on an aid package and European allies were unable to provide promised ammunition. Ukraine has been outnumbered for months and forced to ration its ammunition. This means that few Russian missiles and drones were shot down and Russia was able to advance along the front line,” Stoltenberg specified.

«But it is not too late for Ukraine to prevail. More support is on the way. Mr President, you addressed the NATO Defense Ministers at the NATO-Ukraine Council a few days ago. The allies have listened to your clear appeal and have agreed to increase our support”, concluded the NATO secretary general, recalling the aid package approved by the United States and the support promised by many European countries. “I expect new aid to be announced soon,” Stoltenberg then commented.
